Companies are always on the lookout for the next innovation in their industry. That new piece of technology that has the potential to revolutionize their business. In March of this year Hypertherm introduced its new XPR300 plasma system, and it represents a serious technological advance over its predecessor, the HPR system.
You might be wondering how the latest technology can make an impact on your business. Here are the five biggest benefits you can expect when upgrading to the Hypertherm XPR300 plasma system.

1. Superior Cuts
The X-Definition technology in the XPR300 results in superior cut quality on mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
This is due to many new advances, including HyFlow Vortex and Vented Water Injection. These features result in sharper and more consistent edges, and a reduction in angularity. The quality is evident in this graphic showing the cut edge quality on stainless steel and aluminum.
2. Increased Cut Speed
An important factor when assessing the value of a new machine or piece of technology is how it will impact productivity. The XPR300 not only increases cut quality, it also increases the speed at which you can cut. On a 30mm thick piece of material, the XPR300 can cut almost 20% faster when compared to the HPR260XD. On pieces thicker than 50mm it is an almost 50% increase in cut speed.
3. Increased Consumable Life
The XPR300 has the ability to increase the life of your consumables 40-50%, thereby reducing expenses. A small machine shop might spend $1,500 on consumables, while others will spend up to $20,000. It can be a big expense. Imagine the impact on your bottom line if the life of consumables was increased 50%.
The increase is a result of the new arc response technology that provides automatic torch protection and automatic ramp-down error protection. The difference is illustrated in this chart from Hypertherm showing the number of 20-second starts with 5% ramp-down errors.
4. Remote Monitoring
The XPR300 contains WiFi capabilities, allowing you to monitor its performance even if you’re not next to the machine. You can also receive error alerts remotely, allowing you to assess the situation and make decisions from wherever you are.
5. Ease of Use
If you’re looking for a machine that is easier to use, the XPR300 was designed to fit that need. The system contains only 46 unique product part numbers, compared with up to 85 in other HPR models. It also features a QuickLock electrode that can be installed with just a ¼ turn, rather than the standard three full turns. Additionally, the torch is easily inserted/removed, requiring only one hand to do.
The newest plasma cutting technology can provide superior cuts, increase cut speeds, increase the life of consumables, allows for remote monitoring, and is easier to use. That means not only an impact on revenue, but also a decrease in normal operating expenses.
Here at Hornet Cutting Systems are excited to offer the new Hypertherm XPR300 on several of our machine models. Recently we had the opportunity to install a Hornet-XD CNC plasma cutting machine featuring the new XPR300 for Midwestern Manufacturing in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Read about their experience and the increase in cut quality in the October 2017 issue of Metal Forming Magazine.
